ADS-B + United Nations

With the United Nations in session this week, it’s been kind of fun monitoring the air traffic. (I run a little ADS-B listener which catches a chunk of realtime NYC air traffic – http://www.rsb0.com/dump1090/gmap.html).

We have a helicopter flying a pattern of ovals and our apartment is at one edge of it. Also interesting, it’s broadcasting either a fake registration number or the registration number it is broadcasting has been doctored up in the databases. It’s showing up as a single piston light aircraft. But it’s definitely a helicopter. (On Monday, it had a buddy – registered to a company named “T A F Y” and registered in VA – quick Google search said this was an FBI shell company)

I can only guess it’s providing security in some form. The question is what flavor? Stringray? FLIR? Other? Either way, I learned a new term this week: OSINT.
